Best Tourist Attractions of India
India is quite a diverse country, with each state having something different to offer. In addition to its size and population, the country has a wide variety of landscapes, monuments cultures and places that tourists can explore. India’s rich history and geographical diversity makes it very appealing as a tourist destination. Below is a look at the best tourist attractions of India.
Ajanta Caves
The Ajanta caves are cave monuments that are rock-cut and which date back to the second century BC. It is believed that these caves were abandoned in around 650AD, only to be stumbled upon by a British hunting expedition in 1819. The isolated state of the Ajanta Caves has contributed to excellent state of preservation of some of the painting found there today. The well-preserved paintings illustrate everything ranging from city streets and sailing ships to battlefields and snow-capped mountains. The gateway to these caves is the city of Aurangabad.
Nicobar and Andaman Islands
The tourist attractions in India are not restricted to the mainland. In the Bay of Bengal that is about 1,000 kilometers off the country’s east coast are the tropical Nicobar and Islands, which also fall under Indian Territory. The most popular place that tourists visit is Havelock Island, whereby they can enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling.
The Lake Palace
The Lake Palace is located within Lake Pichola, in Udaipur city. It was constructed in the 18th century as a royal summer palace. Nowadays, it is a 5 star luxury hotel that operates under the name the Taj Hotels Palaces and Resorts’. This hotel runs a boat that transports guests from the City Palace on Lake Pichola’s east bank to the hotel.
Kerala
Tourists often refer to Kerala asGod’s own country’. Located in south India, this coastal state has grown to become one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. It is rich in distinctive culture and traditions as well as intact tropical beauty. Kerala is especially known for elaborate temple festivals, tranquil backwaters and its elephants. The Kerala backwaters are a chain of lakes and lagoons parallel to the coast of the Arabian Sea. These waters are home to unique aquatic life species such as frogs, water birds and turtles. Houseboat tourism is a popular tourist activity in these backwaters. The pace of life in the area is slow, making it the ideal place for a leisurely vacation.
Harmandir Sahib
Harmandir Sahib is the main tourist attraction in Amritsar. Best known as the Golden Temple, it is also the most important religious location for the Sikhs. Construction of the temple started back in the 16th century, with its upper floors being covered with gold in the 19th century. It is a stunning temple that attracts thousands of pilgrims from across India.

Agra is India’s most visited city as it is home to the Taj Mahal. This mausoleum of white marble is among the Seven Wonders of the World and one of the greatest eternal love symbols. Apart from Taj Mahal, other places tourists can visit in Agra include Ram Bagh, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
